For Referring Providers
Concussion, Post-Concussive Syndrome & Post-Traumatic Headache
Dr. Harjasleen Walia, MD · Fellowship-Trained Neurologist (Headache & TBI, Barrow Neurological Institute) · NYU Neurology Chief Resident · Published in Post-Concussive Syndrome · Specializing in Concussion & Headache Since 2018
Clinical Rationale
A normal CT is not a normal brain.
Mild TBI produces diffuse axonal and metabolic injury that conventional imaging rarely captures. Persistent headache, cognitive slowing, vestibular dysfunction, sleep disruption and mood change after head injury are best understood as one syndrome rather than unrelated complaints. We pair objective measurement with targeted neurological treatment and serial reassessment, and we communicate findings back to you.
When to Refer
- Persistent post-concussive symptoms beyond 2–4 weeks (cognitive, vestibular, sleep, mood, headache)
- Post-traumatic headache, including new daily persistent or medication-overuse patterns
- Dizziness, visual-vestibular mismatch or imbalance after head or whiplash injury
- Cognitive complaints with normal conventional imaging
- Athletes needing objective baseline, return-to-play or return-to-learn guidance
- Repetitive head-impact exposure history with emerging symptoms
Diagnostic & Treatment Capabilities
- Neuroimaging
- MRI with DTI/TBI protocol for white-matter microstructural injury; fMRI for functional network assessment.
- Cognition
- Computerized cognitive testing and neuropsychological testing for baseline and serial tracking.
- Vestibular & Balance
- Videonystagmography (VNG) and instrumented balance-board testing.
- Headache Medicine
- Fellowship-level phenotyping and evidence-based preventive and acute management.
- Neuromodulation
- Full-body, transcranial and transnasal red light therapy to reduce inflammation and enhance recovery at the cellular level, plus IV infusion of recovery supplements, as adjunctive care.
